Job Vacancy - Commercial Manager (Rail) - Central Birmingham

The successful candidate will have commercial experience in a range of rail and multi-disciplinary projects. In this role, you will be involved in working on a mix of rail, highways, civil and commercial projects across the West Midlands with high profile clients. This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing business where you will be based in Central Birmingham, working directly with clients and stakeholders.

We are looking for someone who can influence commercial behaviours and activity, manage the commercial aspect of the project, identify all commercial risks to the business and our clients and provide management information to promote decision making.

This role would suit a Quantity Surveyor who wants to take a step up to the next level of their career.

General Duties

  • Managing the commercial activities and their inter relation on major work-streams, projects and programmes to deliver commercial control which can include the generation and management of project budgets for clients, often in support of third party funding applications.
  • An understanding of the commercial risks associated with engineering & construction contracts and implementation of suitable control measures.
  • Contract management of rail projects from initial enquiry to contract completion – including design (feasibility and outline) and construction (generally design & build).
  • Production of management information associated with contract delivery relating to their commercial and contractual aspects.
  • Ensuring the commercial and contractual monitoring, issuing of contractual notices in a timely manner and control of contractors, suppliers and third parties such as Network Rail.
  • Close liaison with operations and maintenance teams to ensure service delivery exceeds contract thresholds.
  • Reviewing project commercial and time/programme implications of submissions ranging from early warning notices, compensation events / variations and claims and provision of advice as to liability and assessment of value.
  • Processing of supplier payments including advising clients on certification.
  • Review and progressing of variation proposals to agreement.
  • Negotiation and settlement of final accounts.
  • Financial reporting.
  • Taking the commercial lead in tendering activities. This includes ensuring the tender documents are complete and there is no conflict in the documentation.
  • Create and maintain project capital and non-capital spending plan.

Skills and Experience


  • Educated to degree level in a Quantity Surveying/Engineering or similar discipline.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate confidently, effectively and persuasively.
  • Excellent time management skills and able to prioritise a busy work load and handle the associated pressure.
  • Familiarity with the standard forms of contract and an ability to interpret and apply their terms.


  • MRICS or MCIOB or MCInstCES.
  • Hands-on in nature, pragmatic in approach and happy to get involved in the detail where necessary.
  • Proven experience of procurement including developing and implementing strategy and compiling contract documentation.
  • An appreciation of strategic issues.
