Job Vacancy - Project Planner (Rail) - Central Birmingham

Do you want to be part of an ambitious, fast-growing consultancy and project management company focussed on rail infrastructure? Are you an experienced Project Planner with rail experience and tons of enthusiasm and zest?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing business based in Central Birmingham. You will be working directly with high profile clients and stakeholders on varied rail and multi-disciplinary projects.

The successful candidate ideally needs to have worked on a variety of projects within the rail industry. You will be a focal resource for the project management team, assisting with planning responsibilities on projects, reporting to the Operations Director, assisting and liaising with the technical and commercial teams.

You must be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Primavera P6, typically being able to create large project schedules of in excess of 1,000 lines. With excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative behaviours, you will have a track record of success in project planning.

The Role

You will coordinate, evaluate and prioritise the project plan as per the project strategy with the guidance of the Project Manager. Develop comprehensive, logic linked, project programmes, incorporating resource and skills planning, materials planning, cost estimating, earned value forecasting and reporting. Continuously monitoring the programmes prepared to ensure they accurately reflect and maintain progress, earned value, cash prediction, and resource data for internal and external purposes. You will prepare and maintain risk and mitigation plans to manage critical issues and problems.

General duties

  1. Extract all relevant scheduling data from the Programme Plan utilising management tools; Resource charts, Gantt charts, Layouts and Filtering, Concepts of float, Schedule status, Baseline methodology, Progress measurement and Management of change.
  2. Support the use/integration of project and contract management systems into the daily operation of the business.
  3. Provide support for the administration of contracts including programme requirements as part of tender/contract preparation, reviewing of tender progress and monitoring programmes once awarded.
  4. Perform project progress monitoring duties including identifying critical path activities and reviewing forecasts with progress achieved to date.
  5. Provide relevant reports and planning support to both project team members and management to ensure the team has all the tools required to make the right decisions to execute the project and meet all established project deadlines.
  6. Regularly keep management and stakeholders informed of problems, issues, and status of on-going projects.

Skills and Experience


  • Intermediate to advanced software knowledge of Primavera P6
  • Proficient to intermediate level in Excel as a minimum
  • Experience of working on railway projects


  1. Proven track record working with project management consultancies
  2. Understanding of the engineering requirements of work on the railway
